Family Reunion Wrestling Style
Wrestling brings the family together. For some wrestling is all in the family — siblings, cousins, parents, etc. For example, renowned sibling wrestlers Dave and Mark Schultz of Palo Alto. The article lists several siblings who continue the tradition of a family sport. For the ladies, this great instructional video features two medal winning sisters — sibling wrestlers.
For me, however, family is brought together in a weird, cosmic, freaky way. Because, of course, nothing is normal in my universe. Let me explain.
So I’m sitting in the “stands” last week at my son’s league meet, minding my own business, playing on my phone when this pretty lady catches my eye. I think to myself, “She’s pretty. She looks familiar. I wonder if she’s a client.” I go back to my game.
Really, I was about to win my solitaire game. It was important.
This chick approaches me. Now, I’m thinking, “I know you.” (hear the sound of rusty gears in my brain cranking?) I say to the pretty gal, “I know you.” She says, “Yes, you do.”
BAM! “You’re my cousin!” Holy cannoli!!
Don’t judge until you hear the whole story. This is my cousin from my dad’s side of the family. We are the same age. We spent a lot of time together growing up. We went to high school together. We had our first children at the same time. She had her second, me my third at the same time. We live in the same county (always have) — about 20 minutes from each other.
We haven’t seen each other in 14 years. In fact, we have never met one another’s children. Nope. Not. Ever. Clearly we don’t venture out much.
So there she stands (me feeling really stupid for not recognizing her) when she explains her son is wrestling against our team.
COUSIN 1 VS. COUSIN 2
No, our boys did not wrestle each other. Of course, that would be funny to have cousins, who have never met, wrestle one another. For another time, I suppose.
If not for wrestling, the odds of our meeting would be slim. I mean, we haven’t seen each other in 14 years despite going to the same Costco, Target, shopping mall….
Wrestling keeps giving, and giving, and giving….
